PixlBit: Zack Zero Review

PixlBit Review: Zack Zero is the most aptly titled game I have played in recent memory. You play as the titular hero, Zack, who is a real zero. That may sound harsh, but zero is quite fitting and describes much more than the forgettable hero. The word is also applicable to the amount of new ideas this game has, the effectiveness of the controls and is precisely the amount of fun I had while playing.

Scene.is – Mortal Kombat Review

Scene.is writes: “Mortal Kombat returns with the ninth installment in this legendary fighting series. This new Mortal Kombat game is not a conventional sequel, but rather a reboot of the franchise. The game goes backs to its roots and builds on the fighting mechanics of the original trilogy, removing a lot of the features added to the series over the years, while introducing new ones. Mortal Kombat starts fresh in this glorious return to form.”

Scarygirl (XBLA) Review By Canadian Online Gamers

During the holiday rush of I had the opportunity to review Ubisofts Rayman: Origins for the Xbox 360, and I must say it was unquestionably one of the better platforming I had played on the console to date. It featured wonderful visuals, terrific sounds, and wonderfully charming gameplay. Much like Rayman: Origins, Square Enix Scarygirl comes along with the many of the same qualities which made Rayman: Origins such a wonderful game, but the main difference is that it is an Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) title and is much cheaper. Scarygirl is a standard platformer (to a degree), features unique looking characters, and has an art style all of its own. Despite all of its wonderful qualities, Scarygirl does have some issues, yet at the end of the day it is a game you should strongly consider.

Tomb Raider development hits alpha, simultaneous worldwide release planned

The upcoming Tomb Raider reboot has hit a development milestone, reassuring us that it will hit later in the year.

During developer Crystal Dynamic’s Crystal Habit podcast, senior producer Kyle Peschel and art director Brian Horto announced that the game has reached the alpha stage of development. As The Silent Chief reports, this means that all the content is finished and pieced together, with remaining dev time devoted to making the mechanics work seamlessly and ridding the game of any bugs.

It’s also been revealed through the game’s official site that Dynamics is aiming for a simultaneous worldwide release for Lara’s latest. A collector’s edition is also planned.

Let’s hope that Miss Croft swings back into action in the later half of this year.

Rocksteady at work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title?

Rumors are popping up that Batman: Arkham City developer Rocksteady is currently at work on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title.

The Paul Gale Network reports that the game, named Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Manhattan Crisis, will feature all four of the radical heroes as playable characters, each with their own fighting style and unique items. Flashbacks would even see you playing as Master Splinter, which would undoubtedly be the best thing ever committed to a videogame disc.

The game would come to PS3,360 and Wii U, boasting Arkham City‘s graphics engine.

Still, we dare not get too excited while this all remains strictly in the rumor section. But if it is true, well, that would make us quite happy.

Blizzard funding next MMO with in-game ads?

It looks like Blizzard’s unrevealed MMO, currently codenamed Titan, could be using in-game ads to fund itself.

A recently posted job listing for a Franchise Development Producer (as spotted by IGN) states: ”Work with major consumer brands to facilitate product placement and licensing within the world of Blizzard Entertainment’s next-gen MMO that enhances the gameplay experience.”

The success of this scheme would depend very much on the context of the new MMO. While Titan is meant to be unlike anything we’ve seen from the developer before, would we really be happy with seen iPod adverts in the background of a war zone?

Rayman Origins on 3DS dated for US

Ubisoft has delivered the US date for the 3DS version of Rayman Origins. The crazy platformer graces the Nintendo system starting March 20th. Europe is expected to get it a tad sooner, on the 16th.

The publisher has other platforms covered as well; the game is already available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii, and will launch for PlayStation Vita next month (14th in the US, 22nd in Europe).

Release date set for Capcom Digital Collection

Capcom has announced that the Capcom Digital Collection will be coming to North America on March 27, 2012 and Europe on March 30, 2012.

The Xbox 360 exclusive is a compilation of eight of Capcom’s best downloadable : 1942: Joint Strike, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, Final Fight Double Impact, Flock!, Rocketmen: Axis of Evil including Rocketmen: It Came From Uranus expansion, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3.

There’s some pretty good stuff in that collection, particularly Street Fighter II, and at the price of $39.99, it ain’t that bad of a buy. On top of that, these will include all of the online functionality, features, and achievements from the downloadable versions. So if you’re looking to relive the “good ol’ days” of Capcom, pick this one up.

Latest Mass Effect novel next week

Mass Effect: Deception, the novel revealed way back in April of last year, will be available in a week, it’s been announced. Next Tuesday, January 31st, is the date attached to it.

The story in this fourth novel — penned by William C. Dietz, unlike the previous three which were squeezed from the pen of Drew Karpyshyn — revolves around Gillian, the subject of science experiments gone awry, who finds herself with some mighty powerful biotic capabilities. An excerpt is available on BioWare’s blog here.

The timing of the novel’s release gives us just over a month to chew through it, before Mass Effect 3‘s arrival in March.
